No sound when editing in Davinci Resolve
Wed Aug 02, 2023 5:23 am
I am new to Davinci Resolve, and editing. When I import my videos, there's no sound when editing. I've dug through all the youtube videos etc, checked all the settings, everything looks fine. The audio bar in the EQ shows it's playing sound, but nothing comes out. When the same file is played in media player, or even if I render the video and export to a folder, the sound is perfect. Can anyone give me any pointers please? I've tried V16, and V18.5, both the same.

Check your Video and Audio IO preferences... make sure it is configured appropriately for your set up.

Other things to check:
- make sure you can hear the clip when playing it in your operating system (verifies the computers sound)
- in the Media window before pulling it into the project (verifies Resolves settings)
- then in the timeline (verifies the project settings etc)
If it's just a problem with Resolve, try going to each page and muting/unmuting. There was a bug from many versions ago that would mute for no reason and would be fixed by muting/unmuting in one of the tabs.

If you are using media player it sound like you are on a Windows machine.
If you are seeing sound levels bouncing around in the Resolve meters, and there is sound on the clips in Media Player, then there is an issue connecting Resolve to the appropriate speaker in Windows, and Windows can be very frustrating when it decides for you what should be happening!!!
First thing, on the bottom right, right click on the sound icon and select "Open Volume Mixer". The first device is usually the default device and in situation like you describe it probably won't have Resolve as on of the inputs in the mixer. You will need to search through the various devices to find the one that Resolve is connected to. Run the clip in Resolve and you should see the meters moving in this device in Windows.
You now have two options: either use that device (speaker) to listen to output from Resolve or change Resolve to match the windows device you want to use. (Peferences | Video and Audio I/O, and the Audio I/O section of that tab. You can have Resolve use something different to the Windows default when you want to listen on headphones but happy for everything else to go to the standard speakers, for example.

I’ve watched countless videos on fault finding, checked every setting, bought external speakers to try, and still nothing. Once the video is rendered, the sound is perfect, as it is when played in any other player before rendering. I just can’t get any sound so I can do my editing.
I think it’s time to try a different editor.

What audio hardware are you using, Darren?
My Biases:
You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Darren, in Preferences/System/Video and Audio I/O, if you are using the computer's built in audio, make sure that the monitor speakers have been allocated. These are my settings.

If the meters are moving but you still don't here anything check that the monitor volume is not muted.

If still no joy, let us know.

All settings look correct, I’ve switched between built in speakers and external USB speaker. I’ve muted and unmuted on every screen, still nothing.
I’ve tried shotcut, vsdc and filmora I think it is, and they all have sound when editing, so it must be a setting somewhere.

Though you are not hearing anything, do the meters move?

Click on the Fairlight tab at the top of the page and select Patch Input/Output. In this example my Source for the audio inputs is Stereo Mix from the Realtek soundcard, and the Destination Audio Outputs are Speakers/Headphones Control Room L&R.

If you open Windows Volume Mixer with Resolve open is the fader towards the middle and the speaker icon not showing as muted?

I’ve just tried a different video and that has some sound but very intermittent and jumpy, even though the video is playing correctly.

Are you running Filmora at the same time as Resolve? That may be stealing resources. Also, check the settings in the Windows Sound menu. These are my settings.

My audio goes mute if I don't do any editing for 30 mins or so, very annoying. I have to close & restart Davinci to get the audio back.

If you have any settings on your computer to let it sleep or hibernate this could cause the problem. You should set everything to never sleep. Also, if you are using an external audio interface connected by USB make sure the USB hubs in Device Manager are not set to turn off to save power.

Your video probably uses audio that has an unsupported audio codec.
DaVinci Resolve Studio 19 (audio codec and souce link):
wav, aiff, mp3, aac, flac, u-law, opus, AC-3, or IMF audio formats
https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/ ... c_List.pdf
DaVinci Resolve Studio 18:

So I used ffmpeg to fix it. I'm lazy so I asked ChatGPT how.
