Review by Silent J ★★½ 2
Two of the most badass, underrated, and underutilized (at least in the Marvel Movie Universe) Marvel characters starring in their own Marvel animated movie? An anime animation movie I might add? What could possibly go wrong?
Well, a lot when the studio doesn't have enough faith in their star characters and feel the need to shoehorn other Avengers into the movie to sell it.
A lot when the script is handled poorly and isn't interesting to begin with.
A lot when a certain romantic subplot is corny and the action scenes are a bit repetitive.
A lot when the villain sucks and the comic relief is annoying.
Just...a lot went wrong. Hopefully, Marvel won't screw up the Black Widow movie, or The Punisher tv show, as badly as this crossover.

Another Japanese made Marvel animation. This one had plenty of action and featured Punisher in a leading role in an Avengers flick. Most of the Avengers team aside from Black Widow were really only very minor side characters, several of which didn't even have dialogue. That really doesn't break the film for me though as I was very entertained by this one since it's really The Punisher's Show for the most part. As such this animation really highlights how bad ass and deadly Frank Castle really is, and I'm okay with that. It may have some plot holes and the Asian anime style of the feature might not be my favorite, but I still liked this one plenty for the…

I am convinced Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson voiced this using other people’s names in the credits.

Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher is yet another Marvel anime, but if you ask me it doesn't even come close to the level of Iron Man: Rise of Technovore.
Black Widow and The Punisher go hunting an old flame of hers, bent on world domination with cyborgs and mind control.
I frankly could not tell you what the hell was going on in this movie, because the plot was just that thin and melodramatic. Most of it was just a lot of good action and explosions. When I say that I want my superhero movies to be about them kicking ass, I don't mean the entirety of them, you still need a scene or two with plot so that the…

What gets lost in the passè piss and moans about comic movies is how complex, rich, complicated these characters can be when they're not the stars of Disney films. In general, I think the MCU is very good at offering generally decent mind candy with interesting aesthetics and the occasional flirtation with higher aspirations. One of my favorite of the lot, however, is Black Widow, which grounds much of the action and tells a dour, grim story with teeth and consequences. It's a movie befitting of Widow, whose character often winds up being a vector for both masculine anxiety about misogyny and feminine anxiety about agency depending on who's writing her. Some of my favorite Widow runs contain some fairly…

Okay, I just wanna call bullshit on Castle being affected by the mind control. This is the same guy who no-sold two people trying to mind-control him to his face at the same time, fuck you mean these Soviet jabronis at Leviathan have him under their spell? Guess I have to expect that level of crap from an organization created by noted X-Men ruiner Jonathan Hickman. Still not gonna forgive him for that ethnostate island of Krakoa.
Anyway, a pretty decent anime movie with an on-point visual design for Punisher, like this is probably the very peak of how my guy'll look. And I appreciate Brian Bloom playing him deadpan for most of the movie, until he lets all his… -

English part below
5,5
If Black Windows' first frames consist of showing her big dicks and that she still needs long fingernails, then yes, entitlement is vinegar. Of course, a…

Review by Sam Morrison ★★★
Two things you need to know about me: One, I am quite a fan of (most) anime and two, I freaking LOVE the Punisher. Been a die hard fan for over a decade, he has remained my all time favorite superhero/Marvel character. You could say I have an unhealthy obsession with him. Most superhero lovers will argue on how he's a "crap character" but there's no changing my mind.
Anyway, mixing those two interests together sounds like a match made in heaven. While there is a ton here for a fan like me, I need to critique what is wrong, in true Letterboxd fashion.
Punisher gets plenty of screentime (as he should, his name is in the title). There are…

This has one of the lamest stories I've ever seen holy shot what a let down. The soundtrack was annoying and distracting. I hate when I watch something that makes me feel like I wasted my time.

I knew of the collaboration between Marvel and Japanese animation studio Madhouse for some time now, but only what was regarding to TV material. It was a good surprise to find out that both this movie and 2013's Iron Man: Rise of Technovore were also produced by the studio, an absolute powerhouse when it comes to spectacle in Anime. Still, I never actually saw a single episode of the TV series and direct-to-DVD films don't tend to be the greatest examples of animation out there, so even with a lift in spirits I approached things with caution.
The idea of Marvel characters in anime fashion always had my interest, especially ones that are as neglected by the mainstream films like…
